City areas
Since 2001, Montpellier is divided into seven official districts, further divided into a number of sub-districts. Each district has a council and a mayoral adjunct.
- Antigone District
Features: This neighborhood is best known for its architectural design by Ricardo Bofill, from nearby Catalonia. It is designed in a grand neo-classical way, blowing up classical motives such as pediments, entablatures and pilasters to gigantical scale. The district is located between the old centre of Montpellier and the river Lez.
- Montpellier follies
Features: There are some chateux, old country mansions and follies around the city, built by wealthy merchants, from the 18th century onwards. Some of them had and still have their own wines. Most of them are built in Renaissance style, with decorative gardens surrounding them. These gardens are designed in a ‘natural’ way, in a style resembling but pre-dating English garden style.
Highlights: Château de Flaugergues, Château de la Mogère, Château d’O, Château de la Mosson
- Old city center
Features: There are a large number of noteworthy historical hôtels (estates, mansions) in the old center. Most of them were built during the period that Montpellier was capital of the Languedoc, under the reign of King Louis XIV.
