Montpellier’s famous figures
Among the famous people born in Montpellier, probably the most notable figure is that of Saint Roch, a Christian saint and confessor, especially invoked against plague. He gives his name to the only train station in the city, as well as to a church and many squares and streets.
The French thinker Auguste Comte was also born in
Among the famous inhabitants of Montpellier, though born elsewhere, there are the Rennaisance writer Francois Rabelais and Nostradamus, the prophetic apothecary. Rabelais studied at the University of Montpellier and later taught medicine here for a short period. The bus that runs late at night in Montpellier is named “Le Rabelais” in his honour. As for Nostradamus, the University of Montpellier was home to his medicine studies until it was discovered that he had been an apothecary.
